IRENA (Međunarodna agencija za obnovljive izvore energije) je prošli tjedan objavila novu detaljnu studiju koja pokazuje ogroman potencijal obnovljivih izvora energije (OIE) na području jugoistočne Europe. Izvještaj pod nazivom Cost-Competitive Renewable Power Generation: Potential across South East Europe (Troškovno kompetitivna proizvodnja iz obnovljivih izvora energije: Potencijal na području jugoistočne Europe) je objavljen na sastanku kojeg je organizirala IRENA, a na kojem su se okupili donosioci odluka iz jugoistočne Europe kako bi raspravili mogućnosti i izazove u povećanju udjela obnovljivih izvora energije u toj regiji. Detaljni rezultati sastanka na engleskom jeziku se mogu naći ovdje. Izvještaj, između ostalog, potvrđuje veliki tehnički potencijal obnovljivih izvora energije u regiji - koji iznosi oko 740 GW. Većina potencijala vjetroelektrana (532 GW) i solarnog fotonapona (120 GW) je neiskorišten, a već danas bi se 127 GW OIE potencijala moglo implementirati na troškovno isplativ način. Ovaj potencijal bi mogao narasti i do 290 GW ukoliko bi u regiji bio dostupan povoljniji trošak kapitala. IRENA-in direktor Adnan Z. Amin je izjavio da su solarna energija i energija vjetra isplativi oblici opskrbe energijom i da se regija nalazi u dobroj situaciji da poveća taj udio u svom elektroenergetskom sustavu na održiv način. IRENA je i dalje spremna pomagati vladama u cijeloj jugoistočnoj Europi kako bi iskoristili neiskorišteni OIE potencijal i kako bi ubrzali njihovu primjenu. Izvještaj daje korisne smjernice donosiocima odluka u regiji kojima je cilj povećati udio OIE u skladu sa dugoročnim ciljevima Europske Unije kojima se potiče budući ekonomski rast. Sve veće korištenje OIE tehnologija i daljnje tehnološke inovacije su pridonijele većem padu troškova i boljoj isplativosti, posebno za solarni fotonapon i vjetroelektrane. IRENA-in izvještaj pokazuje da bi skoro cijeli potencijal za fotonapon i vjetar mogao biti troškovno isplativ do 2030. godine. Širi makroekonomski utjecaj korištenja OIE uz socioekonomske prednosti donosi razvoj lokalnih proizvodnih mogućnosti, otvaranje radnih mjesta, izbjegavanje troškova za zdravlje i okoliš i borbu protiv klimatskih promjena.
